Frequently Asked Questions

Before Your First Lesson

  • What should my child wear?

Proper swim attire is required at every lesson. Here's what to bring:

    • Fitted swimwear — no loose board shorts or oversized suits
    • Swim diapers (if not fully potty trained): double diaper required — two snug-fitting reusable swim diapers, or one disposable swim diaper plus one reusable cover. Children under age 3 must double-diaper regardless of potty training status. Loose or oversized diapers are not permitted.

For warmth and comfort, we recommend:

    • Our pools are heated, but on windy days a neoprene suit will help your child stay comfortable and focused
    • Infants and younger toddlers can especially benefit from a neoprene suit — it extends warmth, adds buoyancy, and helps little ones feel more secure in the water

    Diapering reminder from our T&C:

A fecal incident ('Code Brown') results in a $500 cleaning fee billed to the responsible family. If your child arrives without proper double diapering, they will not be allowed in the pool and the lesson will be forfeited without credit, refund, or Makeup Token.

  • What's your sunscreen policy?

We have a strict sunscreen policy to protect our pool water quality and pool equipment.

Please read this carefully — it is enforced without exception. For students and parents in water

    • Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before arriving at the pool. Sunscreen applied on-site immediately before a lesson will result in the coach denying pool entry. No makeup credit or refund will be offered.
    • Lotion and spray sunscreens are prohibited. These wash off too easily and contaminate pool water.
    • Zinc-based stick or thick cream formulas only. Recommended brands: Little Hands Hawaii, Thinkkids, Thinkbaby, or any similar reef-safe zinc formula that does not easily wash off.

    Quick rule:

✓  Zinc stick or thick cream — applied 30+ minutes before arrival

      ✗  Lotion sunscreen

      ✗  Spray sunscreen

✗  Sunscreen applied at the pool

  • Where are the pools?

Ola Loa lessons are held at private residential pools hosted by members of our community. To protect the privacy of our host families, exact pool addresses are shared by email after enrollment is confirmed.

We have pool locations in Kailua and Kahala. When you enroll, you'll receive:

    • The full address and parking instructions for your assigned pool
    • Any access notes specific to that location (gate codes, parking restrictions, etc.)

Pool locations are also visible in your Parent Portal before each lesson. We recommend checking the Portal before every visit — locations can occasionally change due to maintenance, weather, or host availability, and it is the family's responsibility to confirm the current location before heading over.

  • What should my child eat (or not eat) before a lesson?

Don't feed your keiki in the 45 minutes before a lesson. Food in the stomach and water don't mix well for little ones.

If your child needs a snack to get through to lesson time, keep it light:

    • Simple crackers
    • Fresh fruit — berries or banana
    • Small portions only

Avoid heavy, greasy, high-fiber, or high-sugar foods before lessons — these digest slowly and can cause stomach cramps, bloating, or nausea in the water.

Policies & Scheduling

  • What if my child is sick or we need to cancel a session?

Life happens — here's how cancellations work depending on your program type:

Tuition-based memberships (1:1, 2:1, Splash at Home, Parent + Me)

    • Cancel at least 4 hours before your scheduled start time and a Makeup Token will be issued automatically. You can redeem it for an eligible class through the Parent Portal, subject to availability.
    • Cancel less than 4 hours before the session and the session is forfeited — no Makeup Token, no credit, no refund.
    • Illness: A Makeup Token may be issued when possible but is not guaranteed. Your child must be fever-free and medication-free for at least 24 hours before returning to class.

Punch Pass programs (Parent + Me, Adaptive Swim, Survival Swim, Accelerated Swim)

    • Cancel at least 4 hours before your session and the punch is not consumed — it stays on your pass for a future booking.
    • Cancel less than 4 hours before and the punch is forfeited.

    For all programs:

If Ola Loa cancels a class (weather, pool closure, instructor illness), the session will be rescheduled or a Makeup Token issued at our discretion.

  • How do I use a Makeup Token?

Makeup Tokens are issued to your Parent Portal when a Tuition-based class is canceled with at least 4 hours' notice.

    Here's how to redeem one:

    • Log in to your Parent Portal at olaloaswim.com
    • Go to My Account and select your child's name
    • Select Makeups to see your available tokens, expiration dates, and token details
    • Select 'Use Token' next to the token you'd like to redeem — a list of eligible makeup classes will appear
    • Select the date at the top of the screen and then the class time from the list of available classes — the token is applied immediately, no additional charge

A few important things to know:

    • Makeup Token redemption depends on class availability — it is not guaranteed
    • Your makeup class may be at a different time, location, or with a different instructor than your regular slot
    • Tokens are only redeemable within 90 days of the current date
    • Makeup Tokens expire per the term shown in your Parent Portal at the time of issuance — check the Makeups section for your expiry date
    • Tokens do not roll over, extend, or carry cash value

Punch Pass holders — this works differently for you:

If you cancel a Punch Pass class with 4+ hours' notice, your punch is simply not consumed and stays on your pass — no token needed. Go to My Account > Passes to book a different class when you're ready.

  • How do I book a class using a Punch Pass?

Punch Passes are pre-purchased bundles of class visits.

Once you have a Punch Pass on your account, here's how to redeem it:

    • Log in to your Parent Portal at olaloaswim.com
    • Go to My Account and select your child's name
    • Select Passes to see your available Punch Passes and remaining punches
    • Choose 'Use for Class' next to the pass you'd like to redeem — this will show you a list of eligible classes available for booking
    • Select the date at the top of the screen and then the class time from the list of available classes — one punch is deducted immediately at the time of booking

A few things to keep in mind:

    • Spot availability is not guaranteed — Punch Pass bookings are subject to class capacity at the time you redeem
    • Cancel at least 4 hours before the class and the punch is returned to your pass automatically. Cancel less than 4 hours before and the punch is forfeited — no credit or refund
    • Punch Passes expire per the term shown in the Parent Portal at the time of purchase — check your pass details for the expiry date. Unused punches have no cash value and do not roll over
    • Some passes are Family Passes (any enrolled student in your family can use them) and some are Student Passes (one child only) — this is noted in your pass details

    Programs that use Punch Passes:

      • Parent + Me Group Classes — drop-in punch pass or the Legacy Unlimited Monthly Pass

      • Adaptive Swim — 30-lesson punch pass

      • Survival Swim — 30-lesson punch pass

      • 1:1 Private and 2:1 Semi-Private — also available as drop-in via punch pass

  • Is there a long-term contract?

No long-term contract is required for any Ola Loa program. Here's how each program works:

    • Tuition-based memberships (1:1, 2:1, Splash at Home, Parent + Me): month-to-month, auto-billed. Cancel anytime with 30 days' written notice via email or the Parent Portal. No prorated refunds during the notice period.
    • Punch Passes (Parent + Me, Adaptive Swim, Survival Swim): pre-purchased and non-refundable. No recurring billing — you buy when you're ready.
    • Accelerated Skills packages: custom packages with no recurring commitment. Pay per package.

  • What is the anniversary fee?

All enrolled students are charged a one-time annual Anniversary Fee of $40, regardless of program type. This fee is good for one year from the date charged and covers your active enrollment status. It renews each year and is non-refundable.

  • Can I share my Punch Pass or lessons with another family?

No — Punch Passes and lesson enrollments are non-transferable and may not be shared with or assigned to another family or child. All participating students must have an active registration on file with Ola Loa.

Some Punch Passes are issued as Family Passes (redeemable by any enrolled student in your family) — this will be noted at the time of purchase.

Programs & Instruction

  • What age can my child start?

We welcome swimmers from as young as 4 months old. Here's a quick guide by program:

    • Intro to Parent + Me Group Classes: 4 months to 6 months
    • Parent + Me Group Classes: 6 months to 3 years
    • Survival Swim: 6 months to 3 years
    • 1:1 Private Lessons: 2 years and up
    • 2:1 Semi-Private Lessons: 3 years and up
    • Adaptive Swim: 6 months to 10 years
    • Accelerated Skills: all ages — contact us to discuss
  • What is the Survival Swim program — is it the same as ISR or INFANT AQUATICS?

Survival Swim is Ola Loa's specialized water safety program for infants and toddlers ages 6 months to 3 years. It is not ISR (Infant Swimming Resource). Ola Loa's Survival Swim uses its own evidence-based method focused on building survival instincts and safety skills through structured, repetition-based instruction.

A few things parents should know before enrolling:

    • Lessons are 10–15 minutes — short and focused is the right approach for this age group
    • Your child will likely cry, especially in early sessions. This is normal and expected — it means the learning is happening, not that something is going wrong
    • The first appointment is always an orientation — no pool entry. Your child meets the coach and gets comfortable with the environment first
    • Survival Swim is available by waitlist only

  • What is Adaptive Swim?

Adaptive Swim is one-on-one instruction for children ages 6 months to 10 years with sensory sensitivities, anxiety, autism spectrum differences, or physical and mobility considerations. Lessons are up to 30 minutes, with coaching time adjusted in and out of the water based on your child's needs that day. If your child requires additional time due to their abilities and needs, an additional $1/minute charge can be added to your session price.

Every Adaptive Swim plan is built around your child specifically. Coaches are briefed on your child's needs before the first session, and progress follows your child's pace — not a fixed curriculum.

Adaptive Swim is available by waitlist only.

  • Can my child's lesson be taught by a specific instructor?

You're welcome to request a specific coach when you enroll, and we'll do our best to accommodate. However, Ola Loa may substitute instructors as needed due to scheduling, illness, or operational needs. No refunds or credits are provided due to instructor changes — our coaches are trained consistently and your child will be in great hands. A part of learning a skill is ensuring that the skill is also generalized. It is a good experience for students to switch coaches especially as they become more skilled. Generalization is the ability to use your skill set in a variety of environments with a variety of people.

  • Can I record my child's lesson?

Video and audio recording of lessons is not permitted without express written approval from Ola Loa. This policy exists to protect the safety and focus of all children in the lesson area, and to protect our coaches' instructional methods.

If you'd like footage of your child's progress, please reach out to the admin and we'll discuss options.

  • A parent or guardian must be present — what does that mean?

A parent or legal guardian must remain physically on-site for the entire duration of every lesson. If a guardian leaves the premises — even briefly — the lesson may be suspended or ended immediately for safety reasons, without refund.

For Parent + Me classes, the participating adult in the water must be at least 18 years old.

Billing & Payments

  • How does billing work for monthly memberships?

Monthly memberships (1:1, 2:1, Splash at Home, and Parent + Me) are billed automatically each month through Autopay using the payment method you set up in the Parent Portal. The amount depends on how many times your weekly session falls within that billing month — some months have 3 sessions, some have 4, and occasionally 5.

You must keep at least one active, valid payment method on file at all times as a condition of enrollment. Removing your payment method does not cancel your membership — written cancellation notice is still required.

  • How do I cancel my membership?

Written notice of 30 calendar days is required to cancel, freeze, or modify any Tuition-based (monthly membership) enrollment. You can submit a notice by email or through the Parent Portal.

Turning off Autopay alone does not complete a cancellation — you'll still be responsible for charges during the notice period. No prorated refunds are issued for any portion of the 30-day window.

A $50 late-notice fee applies if the required notice is not given.

  • What happens if my payment doesn't go through?

If an Autopay charge is declined or fails, your enrollment will be automatically suspended until the balance is paid in full. Suspended enrollments do not hold your timeslot, and any classes missed during suspension are forfeited without credit or refund.

A $25 processing fee applies to returned or bounced payments. Overdue accounts may also incur a late fee of up to $25 per month. Please keep your payment information current in the Parent Portal.

Mid-Pac Country Club

  • How does billing work?

Sessions will be billed to your MPCC account.

  • What if my child is sick or we need to cancel a session?

Life happens — here's how cancellations work for MidPac lessons:

    • Cancel at least 4 hours before your scheduled start time.
    • Cancellations with less than 4 hours notice will result in a charge of 25% of lesson tuition.
    • A No Show will result in a charge of  50% of lesson tuition.
